Buying Recycled

Buying recycled and recyclable goods is just as important as recycling. It takes time to get into the habit of making sure that most products you buy can be recycled or reused. Below are some tips to help you out.

What To Buy

Glass bottles and aluminum cans - When possible, consumers should try to use reusable containers.
Steel cans - like soup and coffee cans.
Recycled paper - Read the label to find out how much of that paper was made from recycled materials. Also, look for the acronyms PCC (post consumer content) and PCW (post consumer waste).

Buying Paint At The Bees Ferry Convenience Center

Did you know that you can buy used paint at the Bees Ferry Convenience Center? The paint that Charleston County residents can bring to the Recycling Center or to one of the eight convenience centers located throughout the County is used to create the recycled paint that is sold.

The Convenience Center sells white and off-white colored paint. The site attendant can help you with picking out your paint color. The paint costs $10 per five-gallon bucket, and must be paid for at the Scale House located at the entrance of the landfill. Once you have your purchase receipt from the scale house, you can pick up your paint from the site attendant at the convenience center.

How Paint is Recycled

The paint that Charleston County residents bring to one of the eight convenience centers located throughout the County is mixed together at the Bees Ferry Landfill Convenience Center. The shades are first separated in the latex processing shed. When paint is being made, the colors are poured into a 55-gallon drum. When the drum is full, the paint is blended with a mixer. After an hour of mixing, the paint is poured into 11 five-gallon buckets. The top of the lid is coded with a date of when it was made and a swatch of which color shade.

Oil-based paints are not mixed into the latex paint, and most of the paint sold has a flat finish. Any empty cans and lids not reused are put in the recycling container for metal recycling.
