Historic Preservation Commission

The Charleston County Historic Preservation Commission consists of nine members appointed by County Council. The Commission has final decision-making authority on Certificates of Historic Appropriateness. In matters for which Commission is the authority, Commission's is the sole meeting required for resolution. The Historic Preservation Commission acts in a review and recommending capacity to County Council for Designations of Historic Property, and may also conduct first review and evaluation of all proposed nominations for the National Register of Historic Properties. For these matters, the Commission meeting and subsequent County Council meetings are necessary for Council's resolution.

Historic Preservation Commission Applications

Certificate of Historic Appropriateness applications, and Designation or Removal of Historic Property or District applications may be submitted via email or in person. Please contact staff at CCHPC@charlestoncounty.org or 843-202-7200 to set up a pre-application meeting.

Historic Preservation Commission Meetings and Public Comment

Members of the public may submit questions or written public comments regarding cases to be heard at Charleston County Historic Preservation Commission meetings via email CCHPC@charlestoncounty.org or by mail to the Zoning & Planning Department, 4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston, SC 29405.
