Peter Tecklenburg believes that public service is a noble calling, but one that demands fidelity to the trust that is given. Since first being elected Charleston County Auditor in 2012, he has worked to increase transparency, improve citizen services, and oversee the county's tax system with accountability and honesty. Tecklenburg has been a leader in the state, bringing new innovations and efficiencies to county government.
Charleston County has diverse needs, home to three of the four largest cities in South Carolina, Charleston County also has a rural identity that must be protected. Peter supports open land conservation and has been an advocate for Heirs Property issues. A believer in responsive government, Tecklenburg has established notable programs that have assisted active duty service members, small and large businesses, and local governments.
Tecklenburg currently serves as co-chair of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) committee for the South Carolina Association of Auditors, Treasurers, and Tax-Collectors (SCATT). Peter is an active volunteer with numerous community causes including the United Way, performing as the 2016 Charleston County Government campaign chairman; in 2017 he is a part of the Trident United Way Campaign Cabinet. Tecklenburg is vice-chair of the Jefferson Awards Lowcountry Advisory Committee and a member of the board of trustees for the SC ETV Endowment. He has previously served on a number of community boards including the board of trustees for Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital.
Peter was raised in Charleston, he attended Bishop England High School, and graduated from Seton Hall University. He has a Masters of Public Administration from the University of South Carolina. Tecklenburg and his wife, Stephanie, were married on Edisto Island and live West of the Ashley. They have two daughters: Catherine and Charlotte. Peter is proud of his family’s dedication to public service, his grandfather Henry served as Charleston County Auditor from 1957-1963; Peter’s uncle John currently serves as mayor of the City of Charleston.
In an effort to provide more transparency, Charleston County Auditor Peter Tecklenburg has made available his statements of economic interests for the last four years.
